There was the welcome sign to Oklahoma.
To get the lay of the land we went into the offices of the local newspaper, THE MANGUM STAR NEWS. They were so friendly and knowledgeable. Right away they knew who our distant cousins Gary and Loufine Houck were and where their farm was in Mangum.
The Paxton family runs the Mangum Star news. Renee age 12 would love a couple post cards from Alaska. She has a collection from every state BUT Alaska.

Gary and Loufine took some time for Ellen and I even though they were right in the middle of combining this years harvest of winter wheat. They hopped off their tractors to make us cousins feel welcome. For many years Loufine organized the annual Cook - Dean reunion in Mangum. We had to force ourselves to quit talking because we could see they had to harvest the wheat right away. And there was work to be done. So we gave them a hug and bid our cousins goodbye.
THE SUGAR AND SLICE of Mangum.
When Ellen and I were getting hungry, the Paxtons steered us to the SUGAR AND SLICE restaurant in Mangum. And are we happy that they did!! Food and service were wonderfully excellent. I loved the Calzone. Mmmmmm.
Sherri with the captivating smile "forced" us to try one of her mouth watering strawberry cupcakes. Difficult to put up a defense to a smile like that isn't it?
