In Sacramento with Bob and Lori

Ellen an I arrived in Sacramento just in time to attend the bi-monthly meeting of the renown Daby Wine Tasting Institute.

Bob was my roommate at UCLA more than 40 years ago.

9 wines were blinded with covers and all of the fellows of the DWTI tasted and graded each of the wines. Ellen and I were allowed special-guest tasting privileges. And what a treat it was.

Today Bob picked a peck of sweet grapefruit for us right in his back yard. They were very sweet.

Clear Lake @ sundown

We pulled into a very cozy Good Sam campground on Clear Lake in California.

Ellen and I walked out on the dock and watched a kid pull in a 5 lb catfish. He was so excited he was jumping up and down.

Trinidad Bay - A hidden gem

We stumbled across a real gem of a place. Trinidad Bay. An enchanting cove and pier , restaurant and an array of fishing boats anchored out. Don't miss it if you come nearby on 101.

Giant Redwood trees 1000+ years old

Yesterday and today we are driving through groves of giant Redwood trees. They are so big and tall that it almost seems light nighttime during bright daylight.

We drove the Avenue of the Giants. What treasures they are. It was a true thrill just to hug a couple of them. It was like hugging 2000 years of history.

Driving the Oregon coast south to Crescent City

I had forgotten just how magnificent and stunning the Oregon coast was. We had the perfect sunny day to look also. Hundreds of rock or tiny islands are sprinkled along the coast.

We stopped at the Farmers Market in Coos Bay and bought some pastries and tamales to take with us.  We stopped at the scenic Bandon lighthouse and beach south of Coos Bay for a picnic breakfast. A big seagull invited himself to dine with us.

We stopped at many of the viewpoints. We packed a picnic lunch to eat at Gold Beach. We used driftwood logs as our table and chairs.

After reaching Crescent City we drove about 5 miles up into the Redwoods and camped at Hiouchi RV Resort.  We grilled steaks on a gas grill given to us by Hans and Marie.  It worked perfectly.

Surf is up. And no crowds.

The surf was up!  But hardly any surfers. Just two on the whole beach. Both wore full body dry suits.

Winchester Bay RV Resort

We restocked all the condiments and stocked some fresh food. Left the Whited Chicken Ranch about 10:30 or so. Then spent a couple hours shopping for camper supplies.

We drove to the Umpqua lighthouse.

We found an excellent RV campground - Winchester Bay RV Resort. Beautiful views plus all the normal amenities. Sunny all day but overcast as the sun dips below the horizon. Seems chilly tonight.

The wild rugged Oregon wilderness. Like Lewis and Clark.  Except for water, power, sewer WIFI, and CATV 60 channels and hot showers.
